About the Cyber Essentials scheme
The Cyber Essentials Scheme is a UK government-backed certification program designed to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber threats and enhance their cybersecurity posture. It was developed by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and is administered by the IASME Consortium. The Cyber Essentials scheme provides a straightforward, affordable pathway for organizations to improve basic cybersecurity defences and demonstrate their commitment to protecting sensitive data.
Key Components of the Cyber Essentials Scheme
The Cyber Essentials scheme focuses on five primary technical controls that are critical for securing an organisation’s IT systems:
- Firewalls and Internet Gateways
- Secure Configuration
- Access Control
- Malware Protection
- Patch Management
Types of Cyber Essentials Certifications
The Cyber Essentials scheme offers two levels of certification:
- Cyber Essentials: A basic level of certification that requires a self-assessment and an external vulnerability scan by a certification body. It is an entry-level certification aimed at organisations seeking to establish baseline cybersecurity practices.
- Cyber Essentials Plus: A higher level of certification that includes an on-site or remote technical assessment and internal vulnerability scan by a qualified assessor. Cyber Essentials Plus provides a more robust assurance of cybersecurity readiness and is suitable for organisations handling sensitive data or requiring higher security.
